Dear BMC Cutie Pies,
I've been wanting to create a blog spot for us for some time. We need a place to share our stories and memories of Blue Mountain College and our years there. I think a good place to start would be a question.
How did you first hear about Blue Mountain College? Describe your first trip to BMC.
I heard about BMC from one of my mother's best friends. Her name was Dorothy Jean Bright. She attended BMC but I'm not sure when or if she graduated from there. I have tried to contact her but to no avail.
She mentioned BMC to me when I started high school and I guess it just kind of stuck in my mind. Somehow, and I really don't even remember how (maybe I'll ask my mom) I even got to BMC one weekend while I was in high school. It must have been a May Day celebration (remember when it was called "May Day"?) because there was a play that weekend. Joy HURT Hill was the star and the play was "My Fair Lady". She did a great job and really made an impression on me that weekend. I stayed in Whitfield dorm (I think). I absolutely fell in love with BMC that weekend and never had any doubt after that about going there. In fact, I never even applied anywhere else!
So to Dot Bright - a heart felt thanks!

Dr. James Travis gave me my first exposure to BMC. For many years he came every January to our church for Bible study. When I was a sophomore, Dr. Stan Richison, who was then chairman of the music department, also visited our church. He invited me to my first high school weekend and to audition for a music scholarship. That year I met my future BMC roommate (Diane Sparkman Putman). Two years later I arrived as a student at Blue Mt. and met my future and forever roommate, Ray Kirk. In fact, Ray proposed to me on that very first day! We married at the end of that year and I continued at BMC for one more year before we moved for Ray to attend seminary. 28 years later, I returned to Blue Mt. to finish my degree and graduated along with my older son, Reid, in 2004. My daughter Carolyn also is a BMC grad, and my youngest child, Jonathan is a current student at Blue Mt. His girlfriend will attend there this fall. We are truly a Blue Mt. family!
Thanks, Lori, for reuniting old friends from Blue Mt. It has been great to catch up with those who were so dear to me many years ago. Blue Mountain is an amazing place!
I was born going to BMC. My mom and both her sisters were all graduates. The day I was born Aunt Mildred and Aunt Kathleen were headed to campus to meet a classmate. According to rumor,Aunt Kathleen went to Dr. Lawrence Lowery's office, told him that Margaret had a daughter who would be there in 18 years, and paid my regisration fee! I was in the 7th or 8th grade the first time they took me on campus. It was a Mayday program. I remeber thinking it was the stupidest thin I had ever seen when these women were hugging and screaming like they were crazy. Of course that has changed as proved by last weekend. My mom was so sure I was coming to BMC that that day I had a nametag which said class of Susan Clements, class of 78. I came back to high schoo;l weekend and the centennial celebration my senior year in high school. And the rest is history!!
God had always planned for me to be at BMC and He used Joy Hurt Hill to get me there! Joy and I grew up in Memphis together, went to the same high school and attended the same church. She invited me to my first high school weekend at BMC, and the rest is history. In fact, I went home after that weekend and told my parents that I had just found my college home. BMC was such a place of joy during my years there and in the years since. Many of my lifelong friendships were developed at BMC, and where I also met the love of my life. I always cherish any times that I can get together with BMC friends so, Lori, thanks for this blog! It's going to be great!
My first trip was mid-May oh so many years ago now but it seems just like yesterday. Back "in the old days" there were only a handful of people on campus in the summertime and that was mostly staff/faculty. My church's minister of education's wife,Ruby had a sister who was a missionary who attended BMC. Ms Ruby did not attend as she married her husband Buck and they quickly began their family of 4, whom I had the priviledge of baby sitting. Ms Ruby insisted that she take me to see the campus despite the fact that she and her family had accepted an assignment with another church in south MS and where in process of moving. I had my eyes set on attending MS State but I thought if Ruby was willing to take the time when her time was so busy that I must go. I was smitten from that visit and although I didn't know how it would be possible for me to attend, it was providential. That summer I served in California as BSU summer missionary and was home only 2 days when I received a phone call from Golston that it was all set for me to attend and that the financial barriers had been resolved. I was pretty home sick that summerin CA but was "hugged" by over 20 or more rush letters when I arrived in MS. That was just the beginning of being welcomed into the family of Cutie Pies. I'm going to interrupt this wonderful sharing of stories to update my husband Steve's condition because I know that many, many of you have been praying for him. Steve had a scan this morning and his tumor continues to just "sit there" not growing or shrinking and this is after nearly 4 months of no cancer medication! So he will continue to remain off the meds for another 6 weeks when he will be scanned again. Steve is active, working outside around the house, eating well, has a nice tan and looks great! We both know that this is the Lord and answered prayer and our oncologist readily agrees. Thanks for caring and praying for us - please keep remembering Steve as he continues on this journey with kidney cancer.
